Designing a cozy retreat for gathering, connection, and year-round comfort.

When our Bellaire clients came to us, they had a clear vision: the “RH look” they loved — refined, timeless, and layered — but with a more personal, local touch.

Shopping small and supporting Michigan businesses was a priority for their family, and they wanted a design partner who could bring that high-end aesthetic to life in a way that felt warm, welcoming, and attainable.

The result is a home that beautifully balances luxury and livability — a family-focused ski lodge nestled at Schuss Mountain Resort, designed for gathering, relaxing, and making memories all year long.

Designing for Comfort + Connection

Because this home serves as a family retreat, every choice was made with intention. The open-concept living spaces were furnished with deep, comfortable seating in durable performance fabrics — pieces that invite you to curl up by the fire after a day on the slopes.

We layered rich textures, hand-finished wood tones, and natural materials that reflect the northern Michigan landscape. The palette — soft taupes, warm browns, and subtle greens — feels both grounded and elevated, echoing the woods and snow-covered hills just outside.

In addition to furnishings, Alcove also selected, designed, and sourced all of the lighting throughout the home. Each fixture was chosen to enhance the architecture and complement the cozy, modern mountain style — from statement pendants over the dining table to soft, ambient sconces that glow in the evenings.

A Gathering Place for Every Season

While the home was designed with ski season in mind, the family uses it for year-round vacationing. That meant designing for four true Michigan seasons.

The outdoor spaces became an essential part of the plan — from cozy seating around the fire table in winter to durable, weather-resistant furniture that withstands snow, sun, and rain alike. The result is a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience that feels inviting no matter the season.

Inside, the furnishings balance comfort with sophistication — tailored silhouettes and soft, tactile materials that never feel fussy. It’s a space that encourages family connection while offering a touch of understated luxury.
